The Family Man

My attention has been drawn to this new series on the BBC.  I am torn between wishing that I had know about it earlier and asking someone to tape it for me and, on the other hand, being really glad that I don't live in the UK and so don't have to watch it.  More importantly, don't have to be part of the 'water-cooler' conversation the next day when people disect the plot, the characters and what is wrong and who should be 'allowed' to have IVF, and isn't it wonderful that IVF is there and that means that everyone can have babies whenever they want.  And etc.

On a more serious note, it's interesting to see that IVF and infertility is now featuring as the main thrust of a drama series.  Obviously I haven't been too aware of UK TV schedules for the last 3 years, but my understanding has been that infertility has only been tackled through the documentary process or through some allusion to characters 'trying for a baby'.  It's a good social marking point when something is approached through the medium of the soap-opera or a drama series.

you think so? i've not seen the programme, and i am sure that it is well researched but basing anything on a soap opera smells iffy to me in pretty much any circumstances.
On the flip side, awareness and accessibility is fundamental to our understanding of what can be so easily misunderstood/underestimated. all in all, i do probably agree so long as people think for themselves, which i fear is becoming quite rare....

knobber, a lot of people get their initial awareness of important things from soap ops and dramas - my point is that once it appears in a soap op or a popular drama it truly is in the public domain. I'm not saying that it's necessarily the best way to be getting info but it raises awareness and often directs people onto better places to become better informed.

don't get me wrong dmts, i was only tentatively criticising. the amount of people that rely on soaps as source of factual information is breath-taking. my family being a perfect example.... flipping morons, so they are, spending their lives deliberating the hot spots of eastenders like its their own lives, and subsequently basing their reactions on what they have seen. my sister hasn't muttered a sentence not indirectly quoted from hollyoaks since 2001.

thumbs up for raising awareness, thumbs down for dramatic interpretation.

so, having re-read your comment. absoloodles! costs and benefits.
